Stickers in music lessons

Many music teachers use stickers as small, immediate rewards: a sticker on the page of a piece played well, a star on a practice chart for each day of practice, or a label when a scale is mastered. For younger students especially, the visible record of progress keeps motivation up between lessons. Teachers can also use stickers to mark the passage to practise this week, highlight tricky bars, or label pieces ready for a performance or exam.

Students can place term stickers on the matching section of their music after identifying it, which reinforces vocabulary more actively than a worksheet.

• Give one star sticker per day of practice; a full week earns a special label.

Printing and cutting

1. Print on sticker paper at 100% scale; glossy paper makes the note colours pop.
2. Use the best quality setting and let the ink dry.
3. Cut around each sticker on the white border.
4. For stickers on instrument cases or water bottles, add clear laminate.
5. Avoid putting stickers directly on instruments’ finished surfaces — adhesive can mark lacquer and varnish.

A simple practice sticker chart

Draw a table with the days of the week down the side and the practice goals across the top — for example scales, current piece and theory. Each time the student completes a goal, they add a sticker. At the next lesson, the teacher reviews the chart together with the student and adds a special reward label for a full week. Charts make practice habits visible to students and parents, and give the teacher a quick picture of what happened between lessons.

Stickers for groups and ensembles

Band and choir leaders can use folder-tab stickers to organise shared music folders by concert or section, and practice-reward labels for section rehearsals. Term stickers help younger ensembles remember dynamics marked in the score. A few bright stars on a rehearsal attendance chart are a low-cost way to recognise commitment.
